(NASDAQ:AMZN) and Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) have joined hands in a partnership that will see a portable hard drive that supports syncing launched. The new portable drive, referred to as the Duet, has an Amazon-branded case and will allow for syncing with Amazon’s cloud storage service, Amazon Drive. The Duet has a storage capacity of one terabyte. One of the benefits to consumers following the Amazon partners with Seagate move is that buyers of the Duet will get free unlimited cloud storage from Amazon if they are not already signed up to the online retailer’s cloud storage service.

Amazon partners with Seagate move comes with user-friendliness

The Duet is aimed at users who have a preference for dual backups. To transfer files, documents and multimedia files from their computers to the Duet portable hard drive, users can drag and drop them onto it. If the files are located on mobile devices, the Amazon Drive mobile app can be used to upload them to the Duet hard drive. Once in the portable hard drive, the files will then be automatically synced to Amazon’s cloud storage space. With the Duet portable hard drive, users will be able to get offline access to their photos, files, videos, documents and other multimedia files by just logging in to Amazon Drive. To get access to their files from their mobile devices, users will still use the Amazon mobile app.

“With the Seagate Duet drive, they can view and backup their favorite memories and files stored on their computer as well as on their smartphone or tablet using the Amazon Drive mobile app,” said Seagate in a press release.

Free unlimited storage space

The Seagate Duet portable drive will be priced at $99.99 and is available from Amazon. New Amazon Drive users will also get unlimited storage on Amazon Drive resulting in savings of $59.99 as part of the agreement that was hammered in the Amazon partners with Seagate deal. The Duet will, however, be available for pre-orders only and is currently restricted to the United States. The official release date for the portable drive is December 10.
