Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is said to be planning on releasing a smart speaker that features a screen. According to sources, the touch screen on Amazon’s smart speaker will be approximately 7 inches. This will be in contrast to other Amazon devices that are mostly operated by the Alexa digital assistant that is voice-based. The online retail giant is expected to announce the launch of the device in the first quarter of next year.
Amazon’s smart speaker with touch screen for easier access
The decision to use a touch screen will improve the ease of access to content including calendar appointments, news, and weather forecasts. The move is being seen as a sign that Amazon is keen on capitalizing on the success of its home gadgets that have mostly been voice-controlled.
Amazon’s smart speaker will also be bigger in size. It is also understood that the speaker will be tilting upwards to make the screen visible when perched atop a counter and the user is in a standing position. Owing to the high-grade speakers the device will have, a better quality of sound is expected compared to that of the Echo devices that are currently available. The smart speaker will run on Fire OS, the operating system that runs the Fire range of Amazon products.
Smart home gadgets revolution
The smart home gadgets space has recently become another battlefront among the technology giants. The smart home devices have, however, yet to reach the popularity levels that personal computers and smartphones have enjoyed. Amazon’s track record in the hardware space has also not been consistent. Some of its hardware products have been hits while others have been flops. In 2014, for instance, the Fire Phone was poorly received. Echo speakers, on the other hand, have emerged as a success and statistics indicate that the speakers’ US sales have now reached over five million units since they were launched in 2014.
If and when launched, Amazon’s smart speaker will have to contend with Google Home speaker, a product of Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL). Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is also said to be working on a smart home device that will make use of its digital assistant.
