With just over six months before the start of the Rio Olympics, things aren’t going particularly well for the contractors obligated to build the infrastructure.
Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes has rescinded contracts for the tennis and equestrian venues, citing the contractors’ “noncompliance to contractual clauses.” Word is that the tennis venue is 90 percent complete, but no percentage was given for the equestrian facility.
Both the city and the contractors expect the matter to end up in court.
A spokesperson for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Organizing Committee said Thursday it was “confident the venues will be finished and delivered as planned” in time for the Aug. 5 start of the games.
In a statement, the city said “both the tennis center and the equestrian center have gone through a test event and the works are at an advanced stage.”
New contractors are expected to be hired to finish the job.
